-CITY NATIONAL BANK-
As you will notice from the archives
of the Greeley Citizen, these were very difficult and uncertain
times for our community and our area. After all, the two Banks in
town had just been closed by the government regulators, the Stock
Market had just crashed, and Greeley County was in the middle of a
very severe sustained drought. However, Joseph M. McQuillan, who had
recently moved to Greeley in 1927, and several committed community
leaders were able to somehow put together the capital resources to
charter City National Bank, and opened it on May 1, 1930. These men
believed .... they believed, and had a vision, that in spite of the
Depression and very difficult times, the residents of Greeley and
Greeley County would persevere if given the opportunity to succeed
...
Joseph M. McQuillan and his investors were obviously correct. In 1955, on our "25th
Anniversary", the City National Bank had grown to $1,347,000 in Assets thanks
to the continued support of our customers. Joseph M. McQuillan remained as President
until March 1965 when he passed away. At that time, James M. McQuillan who joined
the Bank in 1946 after World War II and having graduated from Creighton University,
was elected President. During that time, Mick McQuillan who joined the Bank
in 1937, was Cashier until he retired in 1983.
On our "50th Anniversary", City National Bank had grown to $6,758,000 in Assets.
James M. McQuillan then became Chairman in 1988, and continued in that capacity
until 1994 when he passed away. Mary C. McQuillan was elected Chairman in 1994 and William L. McQuillan became Chairman in 2007.
William L. McQuillan joined the Bank in 1983 as Executive Vice President/Cashier.
He became Executive Vice President/CEO in 1986 and was elected President/CEO
in 1989, and Chairman in 2007 and currently continues in that capacity. Mike McQuillan joined City
National Bank in 1988 as Vice President/Cashier and continues in that capacity
at this time.
The balance of our dedicated staff includes Midge Johnson, our Assistant Cashier,
who has been with us since 1959; Mickey Smyth, our Teller and bookkeeper, who
has been with us since 1978; Janice Carraher, our Executive Assistant and IT
Supervisor who has been with us since 1988; Susie Lammers, our Loan Clerk/Teller,
who has been with us since 2001; Rachelle M. Donovan, our Teller and bookkeeper, who has been with us since 2006, and finally, Sheila Goodrich, our contract maintenance specialist
who has been with us since 1991. Our current Board of Directors are: William L. McQuillan, Michael J. McQuillan, Patricia A. McQuillan,
Robert J. McQuillan and W. Patrick McQuillan.
Currently, our assets have grown to $18,569,000. The City National Bank has continued
to grow and prosper for the last 77 years thanks to our dedicated staff and loyal
customer base. While our interests and ownership remain local, the services that
we offer provide global access for our customers. This business model requires
that we continue to enhance the suite of products and services that we offer
to our customers, and enhance the technology that we utilize to service and
deliver these products. Our commitment also requires us to maintain our national
involvement
in Rural and Economic issues. We focus on issues that affect the visibility and
vitality of
Rural
America, keeping a strategic eye toward diverting adverse influences which
continue to focus on massive industry wide consolidation as a"solution" to
keep our country viable. However, this process, in essence, really eliminates
viable
competition
from
our
landscape over the long term.
Bigger is not necessarily better, and we need to remember the past and avoid
the historic replication that lead to the economic meltdown of 1929 and 1930.
Finally, I would like to say that the City National Bank remains committed to
the principles which Joseph M. McQuillan aspired to back in 1930 ... to serve
our community and the people of Greeley County everyday, with an unyielding commitment
to the future of our area.
So, as I noted before in 2005, and it still applies today when I said the following... as we celebrate our 75th Anniversary, we look forward to offering solutions
for our customers and friends by providing personalized financial solutions to
the
challenges
and
opportunities that they encounter in their daily lives, just as Joseph McQuillan
and his staff and Directors did back in 1930. "Yes, history is made today
on
our 75th year in business, but the future for our community begins tomorrow"
... On behalf of our great staff, I thank you for your business the last 75
years and look forward to serving you for the next 75 years.
Bill McQuillan
