Greeley County Circa 1929-1930
Greeley Citizen Archives
December 28, 1929
The doors at the 1st National Bank in Greeley were closed.
A note on the door stated, "Closed by order of the Comptroller
of the Currency. The National Bank Examiner is now in charge." Greeley
was now without a bank for the first time in the modern history of
the town.
January 23, 1930
The Greeley postmaster reports that the closing of the bank
has doubled the money order business in town as local residents try
to partially and temporarily fill the void created by the only bank
in town closing. P.J. Rooney and the Greeley Grain Co. are writing
smaller checks to the local producers so they can get them cashed more
easily in the town. It is now feared that it will be difficult to induce
the capital for a bank to reopen in Greeley as unfavorable business
conditions exist throughout the Midwest.
January 30, 1930
Active promoters Will Kennedy, Tim Long, Roger Mulcahy and
J.H. O'Malley were working on securing a new bank for the town.
February 13, 1930
About 300 claims had been filed by depositors against the
1st National Bank in Greeley that had closed in late December.
February 20, 1930
E.C. Manning, receiver of the closed 1st National Bank, announced
that $12,000 of the $40,000 owed the bank had been collected.
March 6, 1930
Cautious optimism began to prevail in the town as promoters
of a new bank were hoping to be ready sometime in April. The new name
of the bank would be the "City National Bank" upon the approval
of federal government.
March 20, 1930
F.S. Nelson, National Bank Examiner, was in Greeley to make
a report on the need for a bank and the financial standing and character
of the men who have pledged themselves in the enterprise to be known
as the "City National Bank".
April 17, 1930
The headline for the story in the Greeley Citizen echoed
the sentiment of the people of Greeley in exclaiming"O.K. APPLICATION
FOR BANK CHARTER". Word was received in the late evening of April
11th that the charter for the new "City National Bank" in
Greeley had been approved. A meeting of the stockholders was held.
No board of directors had been chosen yet. J.M. McQuillan was the head
of the new organization. Frank Horan of Sterling, Colorado arrived
and would be the new cashier. Arrangements had not been made as to
where the new bank would be housed.
April 24, 1930
The City National Bank would be located in the former 1st
National Bank Building on O'Connor Ave. Officers elected were President
- J.M. McQuillan, Vice-President - P.J. Rooney, Cashier - Frank Horan.
The board consisted of these three individuals plus Will Kennedy and
James Scott. The other stockholders announced were Tim Long, Peter
Kerrigan, Dr. J.L. Brannen, Elmer Burke, T.H. Murphy, J.M. Lanigan
and T.W. Lanigan.
May 4, 1930
The City National Bank opened to a rush of depositors. Bank
officials kept busy all day receiving deposits. The new bank is capitalized
at $30,000 with a $3,000 surplus. Greeley, Nebraska once again
had a bank.
